What a 3D ultrasound actually shows

A 3D ultrasound is a still-image scan that uses the same low-power sound-wave technology as routine prenatal scanning, but processes the returning echoes into a surface-rendered photograph of your baby. The result is a sculpted-looking image of the face, hands or feet — soft, three-dimensional, ready to print. Unlike 4D ultrasound (which is the same data captured as live video), a 3D session focuses on getting the cleanest individual frames.

What week is best for a 3D ultrasound?

Most studios in our directory recommend booking between 26 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. Before 24 weeks the baby has too little fat to render rounded features and looks skeletal. After 33 weeks they're often head-down, low in the pelvis, and harder to image clearly. The 28–30 week window is the sweet spot most parents and sonographers prefer. How much does a 3D ultrasound cost?

Across the verified studios in our directory, single-session 3D ultrasound pricing typically runs $99–$169. Two-visit packages — usually a 16-week gender scan plus a 28-week 3D session — run $199–$239. Gender-only 2D scans start lower, around $59–$69. Each studio listing on this site shows session duration, what's included (printed photos, a USB or download link, mom and dad both watching, etc.) and price-verification date so you can compare apples to apples.

Will my OB give me a 3D ultrasound?

Almost never. Hospital and OB/GYN ultrasounds are diagnostic — they're scheduled when there's a medical reason and they're focused on biometry, anatomy survey, and amniotic fluid measurement, not framed portraits. Hospital scanners often can produce 3D images, but the technician's job is the medical assessment, and the 3D rendering doesn't get the time or positioning attention a keepsake session does. Will insurance cover it?

No. Keepsake (elective) ultrasound is non-diagnostic by definition and isn't covered by insurance. Some studios accept HSA/FSA cards if your account allows wellness or pregnancy-related elective services — check with your administrator first. Is it worth it to get a 3D ultrasound?

Honest answer: it depends on what you want from it. Most parents who book one are glad they did — the photos become a keepsake their kids look at for years. The honest caveats are real, though:

• Image quality depends heavily on baby position. If they're facing your spine, no amount of skill changes that. Good studios will reschedule you for free if positioning blocks the shot.
• It's not a medical assessment. Don't book a keepsake scan instead of an OB-prescribed anatomy scan.
• Cost is non-trivial — $99–$169 is real money. The two-visit package is usually better value if you want both a gender scan and a portrait session.

Is 3D or 4D ultrasound better?

Neither is "better" — they're the same scan, just rendered differently. 3D = still photographs, ideal for printed keepsakes. 4D = live moving video, ideal for capturing yawns, kicks and that first big smile on camera. How to choose a 3D ultrasound studio

Three things matter, in this order:

1. The sonographer's credential. Every studio in our directory operates under a Credentialed Sonographer (RDMS / ARDMS / ASUM / DMU / CASE / BMUS) — that's our site-wide gate. Studios advertising "3D ultrasound" without a credentialed operator are excluded.
2. Session length and ALARA compliance. 15 minutes or less per the FDA's prudent-use guidance. Listings flag any studio offering sessions longer than 20 minutes.
3. What's actually included. Compare the line-by-line inclusions — printed photos, digital download, partner attendance, free reschedule policy, etc.

Is 3D ultrasound safe?

Keepsake ultrasound uses the same low-power technology as the routine prenatal scans you already attend.
