What a 4D ultrasound shows

"4D" means a 3D ultrasound rendered in real-time motion — the fourth "D" being time. Where a 3D ultrasound gives you sculpted photographs, a 4D session captures live video of your baby moving. Yawns, kicks, hands at the face, and first smiles all show up clearly when timing and positioning are right. The underlying technology is identical to the low-power scanning used in routine prenatal care.

What week is best for a 4D ultrasound?

The same window as 3D: 26–32 weeks, with 28–30 weeks the most common recommendation. Earlier than 24 weeks and your baby is too lean for surface rendering; later than 33 weeks and they tend to be head-down and low in the pelvis. Some studios will see you as late as 36 weeks, but the odds of a clear face shot fall sharply in the last month.

How much does a 4D ultrasound cost?

Single-session 4D pricing in the directory runs $99–$169, and most studios bundle 3D photographs and 4D video into the same session at the same price. Two-visit packages (gender scan at 16 weeks + 4D portrait session at 28 weeks) run $199–$239. Compare each studio's listing for what's actually included — clip length, USB delivery, printed photos, partner attendance, and reschedule policy.

Will my OB give me a 4D ultrasound?

Will insurance cover a 4D ultrasound?

No. Elective keepsake ultrasound is non-diagnostic and isn't insurance-eligible. Some studios accept HSA/FSA — confirm with your plan administrator. Listings note HSA/FSA acceptance where applicable.

Is a 4D ultrasound worth it?

For most parents who book one, yes — being able to play back the moment you saw your baby smile for the first time is something photos can't replicate. The honest trade-offs:

• Position matters more than skill. If your baby is facing your spine, the best sonographer in the country can't conjure a face shot. Good studios offer free reschedule for positioning issues — check before you book.
• Video clips are usually 5–15 minutes of raw footage, not a polished movie. Some studios offer edited highlight reels as an upsell.
• It's not medical care. Keep all OB/GYN appointments scheduled by your provider.

Is 3D or 4D ultrasound better?

They're the same scan, rendered two different ways. 3D = still photos, framed-print friendly. 4D = live moving video, capturing real-time motion and expression. Most studios deliver both from one session at no extra charge — you'll leave with prints and a video file. 5D / HD Live ultrasound is the newer photo-realistic variant if your baby's positioning cooperates.

How to choose a 4D ultrasound studio

1. Credentialed sonographer. Every studio in our directory has a verified RDMS / ARDMS / ASUM / DMU / CASE / BMUS operator. Site-wide gate — no exceptions.
2. Session length ≤15 minutes. The FDA's prudent-use guidance, and AIUM's ALARA principle. Long sessions are not better sessions.
3. Free reschedule for positioning. The single most important booking-quality signal. Check the studio's published policy.
4. What you actually take home. Number of printed photos, video format and length, USB or digital download.

Is 4D ultrasound safe?

4D ultrasound uses identical low-power technology to routine prenatal ultrasound.
