RDMS
United States
Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
Two ARDMS examinations: a physics & instrumentation exam plus a specialty exam (usually OB/GYN). Continuing education required for renewal.
ardms.org/verify-credentials ↗Quality gate
Not the studio owner's claim. Not a marketing line. A name we checked against a registry — and re-check every quarter.
Six recognized credentials. Four English-speaking markets. One non-negotiable floor for every listing.

The problem
In most US states, anyone can buy an ultrasound machine and open a keepsake studio. There is no licensing requirement for the person operating the equipment. There is no minimum training standard.
A studio can advertise “trained technicians” without that phrase meaning anything verifiable. The gap between the most experienced sonographer in your city and the operator who took a weekend course is, on the consumer-facing internet, invisible.
That is the gap our credentialing gate exists to close. Listings that fail this check do not appear on the site — they sit in our internal queue marked pending, and stay there until we can verify a credentialed operator or the studio is dropped.
The standard
Six recognized credential families across the four English-speaking markets where keepsake ultrasound is most common. Each card links to the official verification body.

American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography
The accrediting body that issues RDMS. Holders are listed in ARDMS's public 'Verify a Sonographer' tool. Recognized in Canada.
ardms.org/verify-credentials ↗Australia & New Zealand
Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine
Peak society in AU/NZ. ASUM accredits training programs and jointly issues the DMU credential with universities. Members appear in the ASUM directory.
asum.com.au ↗Australia
Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography
Multi-year postgraduate clinical sonography qualification, awarded after coursework plus supervised clinical hours. Many ASUM members hold a DMU.
asum.com.au/education/dmu ↗United Kingdom
Consortium for the Accreditation of Sonographic Education
UK accreditation seal recognizing university-level sonography programs as clinically rigorous. We check the issuing university for verification.
case-uk.org ↗United Kingdom
British Medical Ultrasound Society
Membership and continuing-education body for UK sonographers. We accept BMUS membership in combination with a CASE-accredited qualification.
bmus.org ↗We do notaccept “manufacturer training certificates,” weekend workshops, or unverifiable in-house courses. Those programs may be useful as supplementary training, but they are not what we mean when we say a studio is operated by a credentialed sonographer.
The process
Three checks. Same process for every listing on the site, including paid Featured studios.
We capture the named sonographer from each studio's listing — usually the studio's public-facing website, sometimes the owner submitting their own credential — and record the claimed credential type and registry number.
We verify the claimed credential against the issuing body's public registry: ARDMS Verify a Sonographer for RDMS, ASUM and BMUS member directories, and the issuing university or accreditation body for DMU and CASE.
Listings only become visible on the public directory after the credential clears registry verification. We re-run the same check on a quarterly cadence to catch lapsed or revoked credentials.
We are not a certifying body.We do not issue credentials, we do not test sonographers, and we do not vouch for clinical fitness. What we do is the same check you could, in theory, do yourself for any single studio — we just do it for every studio on the directory.
Credentialing is the floor — every listing must clear it. On top of that, studios can opt into Verified Studio status by uploading their sonographer's credential certificate plus their business license to our admin team for direct review.
Stronger signal than the baseline gate. Verified means the studio voluntarily handed us source documents we could examine, rather than us inferring credential status from public sources alone.
Not a paid badge. Verified is a verification tier, not a marketing tier — though it does require a studio account.
Honest narrowness
We are deliberately narrow about what credentialing covers, so that we don't accidentally overstate what the badge means.
We do not certify medical fitness. A credentialed sonographer can produce a beautiful keepsake scan; they cannot, in this setting, screen for fetal anomalies or replace your OB.
We do not vouch for image quality. That is a function of the studio's equipment, lighting, and experience — read reviews, look at sample galleries, ask about retake policies.
We do not guarantee the credentialed operator personally performs every scan. We verify that a credentialed sonographer is associated with the studio; staffing on a given day is a question for the studio directly.
What we do verify is the floor: a credentialed person operates the machine. That is the single most important signal in a largely unregulated industry, and it is the signal you will never get from Google reviews alone.
Non-diagnostic disclaimer: Studios listed here provide non-diagnostic keepsake imaging. Listings are not a substitute for medical prenatal care. Consult your OB/GYN.
