What is a keepsake ultrasound?

A keepsake ultrasound is a non-diagnostic, elective prenatal scan — the session exists for the photos, video, or gender reveal, not for medical assessment. The technology is identical to the low-power ultrasound used in your routine prenatal care; what changes is the purpose, the duration, and the operator's focus. Keepsake studios are designed for parents who want a portrait session, an early gender confirmation, or a video clip of their baby moving — experiences your OB / hospital scan won't deliver because their job is the medical anatomy survey.

What is the difference between elective and medical ultrasound?

Medical (diagnostic) ultrasound is ordered by your OB / hospital, focuses on biometry and anatomy, and is the appropriate scan for any clinical question about your pregnancy. Keepsake (elective) ultrasound is non-diagnostic — it doesn't replace prenatal care, doesn't screen for problems, and isn't a substitute for any scan your OB has scheduled. The four keepsake ultrasound types

What week is best for a keepsake ultrasound?

It depends what you want. Gender scans: 14 weeks at the earliest, 16 weeks for highest confidence. 3D / 4D / 5D portrait sessions: 26–32 weeks, with 28–30 the sweet spot. Booking earlier than 24 weeks for a portrait gives you a gaunt-looking image; later than 33 weeks and the baby is often head-down and crowded.

How much does a keepsake ultrasound cost?

Is keepsake ultrasound safe?

Keepsake ultrasound uses the same low-power sound-wave technology as your routine prenatal scans. The FDA discourages "non-medical" ultrasound primarily because of three concerns: untrained operators, prolonged exposure, and false reassurance. Why don't hospitals do keepsake ultrasound?

Because it isn't medical care. Hospital ultrasound time is reserved for diagnostic scans ordered by an OB; the technicians' job is the anatomy survey, not portrait photography. Most hospital scanners can produce 3D and 4D images, but the time and positioning attention a keepsake session needs isn't compatible with the medical scan workflow.
